ABOUT ME

I am a visual artist based in Melbourne, with strong links to family in Cairns and Perth, Australia. I work out of a converted warehouse studio in Footscray, and I welcome visitors by appointment, so please get in touch if you would like to see my paintings or discuss a project, residency or teaching opportunity. I’m really chuffed to be included as a case study artist in the new Senior Secondary Visual Art text book for Queensland, alongside some of my favourite artist pals, @sarah.rayner and @johnhoneywill. The book was written beautifully by @seidel_julie, Christine Larsen, Andrew Peachey and Jo-Anne Hine.
In what I’m calling my own little book tour (ahem 😎), I have a couple of workshops planned for art teachers coming up, which I’m looking forward to (because I always learn from them too!). It’s the last week of my exhibition ‘Seeking a silk purse’ at Michael Reid Gallery in Sydney. The paintings are very big, and some of the objects in the parts of the images are sectioned or contained by shelves or cabinets, but I wanted to see if I could create a visual flow despite this, and to keep things ‘painterly’. I quite enjoy zooming in on some areas, where the painting looks quite abstract. #andreahuelin #michaelreidsydney #contemporarystilllifepainting

My exhibition ‘Seeking a silk purse’ opened at Michael Reid Gallery in Sydney last night, with lots of lovely Sydney-based friends in attendance. Thanks so much for coming out!

The exhibition title refers to the painting challenge I set myself: to make large scale works with visual flow and colour harmony, despite the subject matter being busy with disparate objects. That is, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear (although I admit that my love of unexpected pattern and colour relationships means that I often find such semi-curated clutter very appealing, especially when things are organised into categories).

To keep a light touch across such big surfaces, I allowed some transparent underpainting areas to remain visible, while bringing clarity and solidity to certain areas with opaque paint. This made for a different and fun process that took place over weeks instead of days as I made new decisions, adding and subtracting.

Of course, the subject matter does play an important part, too. I am drawn to objects that evoke a smile from a nostalgic feeling, but there is also a small anxiety that these things are no longer in use or appreciated much. So I find it quite charming and a tiny bit sad that they are dressed up in their cabinets in vintage shops and markets to look appealing, like ageing pets at the pound. Seeking to capture the elusive qualities of light and lustre, Huelin is widely celebrated for her vibrant, evocative and gently expressive still-life paintings. With ‘Seeking a Silk Purse’, the artist offers an enchanting painterly ode to the pleasures of a collecting life and the thrill of trawling for treasures in op shops, antiques emporiums and Aladdin’s caves.

Throughout this beautifully realised body of work, Huelin conjures interior scenes and tablescapes that heave with wonderfully eclectic objects and coloured-glass vessels that glisten like jewels right to the edge of her expanded canvas.

These windows into the artist’s favourite treasure troves celebrate the emotional pull and totemic, transportive power of vintage objects amassed in a spirit of eclecticism and more-is-more abundance.

It was fun responding to Alison’s (@peep_optical) newly designed spectacles with this painting. I do love a bit of transparency and shadow play. It was also great to take part in a group show in my new neighbourhood of inner west Melbourne, and to meet some other artists and glasses enthusiasts. Even if I do say so myself, these dark paintings just glow when the light reaches them. This painting caught the light from the skylight in my studio and it almost looked backlit. The six stunning new works comprising the second instalment of ANDREA HUELIN’s ‘Opening Night’ series are now travelling from the artist’s studio in Naarm/Melbourne – where they are pictured here – and can be previewed and acquired by request.

The 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize-winner recently relocated her art practice from the tropical climes of Cairns to the Victorian capital and this change in scenery is fabulously evident in the moodier, noirish ambience of her latest still-life paintings.

“I really enjoyed playing with darker tones and electric light, even candlelight, rather than the bright sunlight of Cairns,” says Huelin, whose gorgeous floral arrangements echo this shift in tone, moving away from the spiky tangle of tropical plantings that featured in her previous work.

Gleaned from inner-city op-shops and her own personal collection, the artist’s eclectic still-life subjects appear moody, jewel-like, redolent of history and ensconced in nighttime spaces more cloistered and atmospheric than those seen in her Cairns-based work.

Delightful clusters of coloured crystal, Murano glass, vintage curios and an abundance of blooms are staged like little choruses and spotlit by vintage table lamps against thick velvet drapery in caramel, burgundy or plum.

We look forward to welcoming this second release of new work by Andrea Huelin, who is among the stars of our flagship Eora/Sydney gallery’s stable of represented artists and is now showing in the Southern Highlands for the first time.

I grew up with the is red vase in the house, and other items that feature in my new body of work, ‘Opening Night’, now on at @michaelreid.southernhighlands in Berrima. I enjoyed having the foreground emerge from the background with subtle adjustments of tone and colour. At times it called for a fair bit of restraint, because it’s hard not to ‘describe’ things more fully, especially when they start to take shape. It’s fun to allow the brain to fill in the gaps - to hope it does, anyway. Works from ANDREA HUELIN’s fabulous new body of work, ‘Opening Night’, can be previewed at Michael Reid Sydney this weekend before they travel to the Highlands for the artist’s highly anticipated show.

This is the first series created by the 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize-winner in her new Naarm/Melbourne studio, worlds away from the tropical climes of Far North Queensland where she previously based her art practice.

For an artist deeply attuned to the nuances of light – and whose subject matter is gleaned from local op-shop trawling and often nested with biographical details – it feels natural that Huelin’s change of scenery can be felt in her new work.

“I really enjoyed playing with darker tones and electric light, even candlelight, rather than the bright sunlight of Cairns,” says the artist. “I’ve also had fun sourcing some new characters for my little tableaux. Hello horsey lamp and dolly lamp! I can feel a new collecting impulse coming on…”.

Huelin’s adventures through the dusty second-hand treasure troves of inner-city Melbourne informed the eclectic ensembles that play out with theatrical flourish in her still-life nocturnes. Murano glassware, dimly lit table lamps, Chinoiserie ceramics, tchotchkes and bits of mid-century kitsch are clustered like little choruses against velvety curtains.

The result is a melodramatic mood with a hint of ersatz glamour and thespian hauteur, as though Huelin’s compositions are set within a cloistered dressing room or backstage at a smoky club or late-night cabaret.

Huelin’s latest Archibald entry – a suitably playful portrait of comedian and actress Emily Taheny in a room filled with wigs – will join this series in her Southern Highlands show.

So, this happened! I have taken the huge step of moving my painting practice to Melbourne. I’m leasing this amazing warehouse space in Footscray, where I’ll be painting and teaching. I’m still settling in just now, but I’m keen to get expressions of interest from you for workshops. Some options are:

* Weekly ‘studio access’ workshops where you can leave your gear here,
* intensive weekend masterclasses
* extended pose life drawing/painting sessions with a clothed model.

I’m beyond sad that my new friend Cal has died. We shared such an incredible, joyous experience this year with my Archibald painting of her in her ‘clown jewels’. She was so generous with her time, humour and friendship. I can only imagine how devastated her family must be. I have lots of stories that illustrate how well loved she was, but one lady on the street summed it up nicely when she stopped Cal as we were walking past, touched her arm lightly and said with adoring eyes, ‘You are a TREASURE!’. #calwilson

The latest exhibition from ANDREA HUELIN and her first since winning the Packing Room Prize at the Archibald, ‘Forage’ continues this week at Michael Reid Sydney and will be celebrated this Thursday evening with an opening reception.

“For this series, I focused on the foliage and the natural elements like coconuts and ginger instead of the glass and ceramic vessels,” says the artist. “It’s the first time I have included backgrounds in the still-life paintings, and I’m happy with the way the forms in those patterns sometimes echo the elements in the foreground, and sometimes they are contrasting.”

We look forward to welcoming guests to the gallery from 6–8pm this Thursday, 21 September, where the artist will be in attendance and refreshments will be served.

Opening this week at Michael Reid Sydney, ‘Forage’ is the first new series of paintings by ANDREA HUELIN since the artist was awarded the 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize.

This career highlight placed Huelin’s work squarely within mainstream collecting conversations and has since seen the Cairns-based painter amass significant patronage.

Now, with ‘Forage,’ the artist has delivered a love letter to her home of 28 years, beautifully capturing the character of her North Queensland garden with bright compositions set against vintage wallpaper designs dating from her childhood.

To coincide with the opening of ‘Forage’, Huelin will present a small selection of works from the series as part of Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin's exhibition at Sydney Contemporary.

It will be a chance for collectors to preview Huelin’s new body of work before experiencing its full sweep at Michael Reid Sydney, located less than ten minutes from the art fair.

For this latest series of paintings, I set myself the challenge of painting in more layers than normal, to create richness and texture on the surface of the painting panels. It’s also the first time I have really focused on foliage and flowers instead of vessels, and the new backgrounds created another layer of complexity! For me, art making is most fun when I am learning, and getting that delicious feeling of discovery when something interesting happens. Even if it’s only the use of a new medium or paintbrush. Oh Wow. I just keep getting surprised and delighted by this Archibald adventure. The Sofitel Wentworth Sydney has made their lobby floral arrangement about my painting of Cal! I have been here for a couple of nights for Gallery events, and when I came downstairs this morning to reluctantly check out, I saw the flowers had been changed over. I looked at them for a while and thought, those colours look familiar…. Hang on!? The hotel is also doing a high tea that is themed around the painting. I love love love that florists and chefs are getting a chance to be creative with the painting (which, after all, is my take on Cal and her creativity). It’s silly headdresses all the way down!! I took my Dad Ted to the Archibald lunch yesterday and we met fellow artists and Gallery guides. I’m back in the studio and revisiting some of the little studies I did to work out my design and colours for Cal’s painting, the now packing room prize-winning ‘Clown Jewels’! I really enjoyed the lead up to doing this painting for the Archibald - I knew I had the raw material for an interesting painting - I just needed to keep trying! Still reliving this day! Back home now, unpacking, washing, feeding the cat (who doesn’t seem to care that I’m better than all of that now). I’ll be back in Sydney later in the week for the opening events, when hopefully they’ll point a camera at someone else!!! But not too much. 😉

A reluctant farewell to Sydney and the fancy hotel that I enjoyed while being famous for a day… now back to Cairns to be a regular yooman again.
